Mosquitoes are small, flying insects that are typically about 1/4th of an inch long. They have a slender body and long, thin wings. Mosquitoes come in a variety of colors but are most commonly black or brown. They are most easily identified by their long, protruding mouthparts (called proboscis), which they use to suck blood from animals and people.
Mosquitoes are found throughout the United States and Canada. They are most commonly found near ponds, creeks, and streams, where they breed in standing water. Mosquitoes can also be found in wooded areas and around homes, and are often worst during humid summer months. They are especially prevalent during floods and periods after heavy rainfall.
The best way to deal with mosquitoes is to eliminate their breeding grounds by getting rid of any standing water near your home. You can also use a commercial mosquito repellent to keep them away. Consider screens for your windows and doors. Sonic repellers can occasionally be useful, but not as powerful as chemical repellents.
